Public Awareness

The Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI) is actively engaged in combating the health risks associated with industrially produced trans fatty acids (iTFAs) in Pakistan. Recognizing the significant link between iTFAs and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular ailments, diabetes, and hypertension, CPDI spearheads evidence-based advocacy, policy reform, and public awareness campaigns to eliminate these harmful substances from the national food supply.

Health Implications of iTFAs

Consumption of iTFAs has been directly associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases. In Pakistan, iTFAs are predominantly found in products like vanaspati ghee and industrial margarines. The national consumption levels of iTFAs are among the highest in the Eastern Mediterranean region, contributing to a substantial health burden. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), six out of ten deaths in Pakistan are due to NCDs, with cardiovascular diseases accounting for a significant portion. Additionally, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimated in 2021 that Pakistan has the third-highest burden of type 2 diabetes worldwide, with more than 33 million cases.

CPDI's Initiatives

1. Policy Advocacy and Development CPDI collaborates with governmental bodies, including the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination, to formulate and implement policies aimed at reducing iTFA levels in food products. Efforts have led to regulations limiting iTFAs to no more than 2g per 100g of fat in products such as vanaspati, shortenings, bakery fats, and breads. However, CPDI emphasizes the need to extend these regulations to all food items to comprehensively address the issue.

2. Capacity Building and Training Understanding the pivotal role of media in shaping public perception, CPDI, with support from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), has organized training workshops for journalists. These sessions aim to enhance understanding of iTFAs, their health impacts, and the importance of policy measures, enabling journalists to report accurately and effectively on the subject.

3. Public Awareness Campaigns CPDI actively engages in public awareness initiatives to educate consumers about the dangers of iTFAs. Through social media platforms, informative sessions, and collaborations with other civil society organizations, CPDI disseminates information on healthier dietary choices and advocates for the elimination of trans fats from the food supply.

Collaborative Efforts

In its mission to eradicate iTFAs, CPDI collaborates with various stakeholders, including:

  • Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI): Providing technical and financial support for advocacy and capacity-building initiatives.

  • Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination: Partnering in policy formulation and implementation efforts.

  • Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA): Working towards establishing and enforcing standards for iTFA limits in food products.

The Way Forward

CPDI remains committed to its goal of a trans fat-free Pakistan by:

  • Advocating for Comprehensive Legislation: Pushing for the adoption of WHO-recommended policies, including limiting iTFAs to 2% of total fat in all foods and banning the production and use of partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs).

  • Enhancing Monitoring and Enforcement: Ensuring strict compliance with existing and new regulations through robust monitoring mechanisms.

  • Continuous Public Engagement: Sustaining efforts to educate the public on the health risks associated with iTFAs and promoting healthier alternatives.

Through these concerted actions, CPDI aims to reduce the prevalence of NCDs linked to trans fat consumption, fostering a healthier future for all Pakistanis.
